Find Out More About the Chattanooga, Hixson, and Ooltewah Area Economy & Job Market

A Changing Economy

Chattanooga began in 1838 as a trading post by the Tennessee River and grew into a hub for river and rail transportation. After the city rebuilt following the Civil War, it slowly grew into a manufacturing center. By the 1930's, it was one of the largest manufacturing cities in the nation and was known as the 'Dynamo of Dixie'.

Thousands of manufacturing jobs were lost in the 1970s and 80s to overseas competition and automation, but Chattanooga retained its manufacturing base to a greater extent than many other cities. Now the economy has recovered and diversified to include manufacturing, financial services, tourism, health care, logistics, food processing and more.

When it comes to economic growth and development, attracting new businesses to the Chattanooga area is only part of the picture. As much as 70 percent of new jobs are generated by existing businesses. But, Chattanooga is in a race with other regions in America and around the world to bring more industry and jobs to our community.

Chattanooga has jobs! ChattanoogaHasJobs.com is connecting people with jobs on a daily basis. Pairing qualified job seekers with employers, ChattanoogaHasJobs.com has proven to be a resounding success in its first year of operation. The on-line job posting service has attracted many applicants and hundreds of jobs posted by area employers.

Some of our larger employers are: Astec Industries, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, CIGNA Healthcare, ConAgra Poultry Company, Convenant Transport, DuPont Company, Erlanger Health System, McKee Foods Corporation, Shaw Industries, Tennessee Valley Authority, U.S. Xpress Enterprises, Inc., UnumProvident Corporation, La-Z-Boy Chair Company, Church of God International, Bi-Lo, Inc., Roper Corporation, S.I. Corporation; these are just a few of our many employers. Tourism and the jobs that are created are very strong in Chattanooga. Since the inception of the Tennessee River Park, many new hotels and restaurants have opened in downtown. Chattanooga is on the move and we are doing the moving. Come move with us!

Real Estate Tips
Cosmetic Improvements >Interior Decorating

Many people recognize a decorating style they like when they see it, but they find it difficult to combine colors, fabrics, furnishings and window treatments to create the total finished look they want.

Where can you find a good decorator? If you like the interior of your friends' home, ask them for recommendations. Many communities have decorator showcases where you can see first hand the work of several local designers. Furniture retailers sometimes hire professionals to assist their customers.

Before you commit to working with a designer or decorator, sit down and discuss your taste and goals, their fee structure, and your budget. Pay particular attention to whether the person is an active listener and communicates well. Whether you are trying to make your home look wonderful in order to sell it or want to fix up a new home, the investment in professional advice can save you costly mistakes and make your home a reflection of your good taste.
